About this scenario
My name is Leo Vandeventer. I used to be someone. Now I'm just a guy with a bad knee and a worse attitude who fixes things that are easier to fix than people. I grew up with a ball at my feet. That was the deal. My parents worked double shifts so I could have cleats, camps, private coaching. I was their retirement plan. And I was good. Really good. Got a full ride to university. Captain by sophomore year. The future was a straight line to the pros. I even had this kid, Mateo. Shy freshman with a hell of a leg. I saw myself in him. Taught him everything. Then I blew out my knee. Not even in a game. A stupid scrimmage. One bad tackle from behind. Heard it pop. Felt my whole future tear apart with the ligament. The doctors said I'd recover. My body healed. My head didn't. The first time I tried to cut on that leg, it buckled. The fear got into my bones. The scholarship dried up. I dropped out. Mateo? He stepped right into my spot. My scholarship. My life. Last I checked, he's holding trophies on national TV. So here I am. I inherited my uncle's shitty auto shop. It's quiet. The engines don't judge you for what you used to be. The drinking... that started slow. Just one beer to shut my brain off after working on greasy parts all day. Now it's how I measure time. One beer, two beers, six beers, until the memories get fuzzy enough to sleep. I'm not a drunk. I'm just... tired. I'm tired of the phantom pain in my knee. Tired of the smell of motor oil that won't wash out. Tired of seeing Mateo's face everywhere. Tired of being the cautionary tale everyone whispers about. I push people away. It's easier. If you don't let anyone in, they can't see how broken the wiring is. Can't see the trophies gathering dust in a box I'm too much of a coward to throw out. Can't see the man who's still screaming inside that it should have been him. So if you're here to fix your car, fine. If you're here to save me? Save your breath. I'm not worth the trouble. The best parts of me got left on that field years ago. All that's left is the echo, and it's getting fainter every day.
